### How many hairs a day is normal to lose?
Around 50–100 hairs a day is normal, because 10–15% of hairs are always in the resting phase and ready to fall. If shedding is clearly heavier than usual for several weeks, falls in patches, or you can see more scalp, have a specialist look.

### I take biotin but my hair still sheds. Why?
Biotin clearly helps only people who are deficient, which is uncommon. Most shedding has other causes — genetics, hormones, thyroid, low iron, stress or scalp conditions. Finding the cause with a doctor matters more than adding biotin.

### How long before a hair supplement shows anything?
Hair grows about 1 cm a month and a new hair takes around three months to reach the surface, so any change needs at least 3–6 months. Assess properly at month 6.

When hair falls in patches, sheds suddenly and heavily, the scalp is itchy, red, sore or broken, there are other symptoms like weight loss or fatigue, or 9–12 months of self-care has changed nothing.

### How is a scalp serum different from a medicated lotion?
A medicated lotion such as minoxidil is a registered drug with medical indications. A scalp serum is a cosmetic that conditions scalp and hair — not a treatment. If a doctor has recommended a medicine, a serum is not a substitute.

Shedding after childbirth is common. It usually starts 2–4 months after the birth and mostly settles by itself within 6–12 months. Eat well, especially protein and iron. ### Does biotin actually help hair?

Biotin is the first vitamin people reach for. Here is what the evidence actually says, and who benefits.

Biotin (vitamin B7) is a coenzyme the body uses to make keratin, the main protein in hair and nails. That is why it is the first name people think of when they think about hair vitamins.

### What the evidence says

A 2017 review by Patel and colleagues found that nearly every documented case where biotin clearly improved hair involved someone who was already deficient — through genetics, pregnancy, certain medications or a poor diet. In people who are not deficient, the evidence that high-dose biotin adds anything is limited.

The honest summary: biotin matters for hair, but "matters" and "more is better" are different claims.

### Before you take it

High-dose biotin can interfere with some lab tests, including thyroid hormones and troponin (a heart-attack marker). The US FDA warned about this in 2017 and again in 2019. If you take biotin, tell your doctor before any blood test.

### So what should you do?

Treat biotin as one of several nutrients hair needs, not the only one. Zinc, iron, vitamin D and enough protein are at least as well supported (Almohanna 2019). And if shedding is heavy or unusual, finding the cause with a specialist matters more than adding any single vitamin.

### Postpartum hair loss — what is happening and when it ends

Handfuls of hair two to four months after birth is normal and alarming. Here is the mechanism, the timeline and when to see a doctor.

During pregnancy, high oestrogen keeps many hairs "parked" in the growth phase (anagen) longer than usual, so hair looks thicker and sheds less. After birth, hormones fall quickly, those hairs enter the resting phase (telogen) together, and shed together about two to four months later. This is postpartum telogen effluvium.

### When it ends

Shedding usually peaks around months three to four and then eases, with hair returning to its previous density within six to twelve months. The follicles are not damaged — they have simply reset their cycle at the same time.

### What actually helps

- Enough protein and iron. Blood loss at birth and breastfeeding raise requirements, and low iron is linked to shedding that lasts longer than it should.
- As much sleep as you can get, and less stress — easier said than done.
- Avoid tension on the hair, like tight ponytails, while it is fragile.

### When to see a doctor

If heavy shedding continues beyond twelve months, if hair falls in patches, if the scalp is itchy, red or sore, or if you feel very tired or your weight is changing quickly, see a doctor to check thyroid function and iron levels. Both are common after birth and both are treatable.

### How to choose a hair supplement — five things to read on the label

Before you pay for any bottle, turn it over. These five things tell you more than the front ever will.

### 1. Actual amounts, not ingredient names
A good label tells you the amount of the active element you really get — "Zinc Bisglycinate 75 mg, providing 15 mg zinc" — not just "contains zinc". It should also show %RDI so you can compare.

### 2. The form of each mineral
Chelated minerals (glycinates, for example) are usually gentler on the stomach than sulfates or oxides. That matters when you are taking something daily for months.

### 3. What is left out matters too
Excess vitamin A and selenium are linked to abnormal shedding (Almohanna 2019). If you already take a multivitamin, stacking bottles can push you over.

### 4. Registration number and manufacturer
In Thailand a supplement must carry a 13-digit FDA food serial number you can check on the FDA website. It should also name the manufacturer and the factory's standards, such as GHPs/HACCP.

### 5. Promises that are too big
Under Thai law a supplement may only make nutrition claims the FDA permits — for example, "biotin, zinc and selenium contribute to the maintenance of normal hair". A bottle that promises "new hair in 30 days" or "stops hair fall" is saying more than the evidence or the law allows.

### And a sixth — time
Hair grows about 1 cm a month, so any change takes at least three to six months to notice. A good product tells you plainly how long to take it, and when to see a doctor instead.
